Welcome to the Lorraine Hanley-Browne Medical Library

MUA is pleased to offer students and faculty access to a wide range of electronic books, journals and links to evaluated clinical research resources.  The print collection is being updated and developed. We welcome your suggestions for additions to our collection. Email the Library Director at g.hall@mua.edu

 

Library Hours:

Monday through Saturday: 08:00 am to 11:00 pm and Sundays: 12:00 pm to 11:00 pm.  On Block weeks the library will open Sunday from 8am to 11pm.

 

ID card:

Please bring your I.D. card to the Library so we can issue you a Library Bar Code and activate your Library account.  You will need to bring this card with you when you come to the Library to use the computers, check out books, or use Reserve Materials. Library Materials cannot be checked out without your ID card.

 

Food and Drink in the Library

Food is not allowed in the Library as it attracts cockroaches, rodents, red ants, and other insects.  Only bottled water can be taken into the Library. No other food or drink is permitted.  Students disregarding this rule will receive one warning. A second offense will be reported to the Dean and Library privileges may be revoked. Food may be kept only in the refrigerator outside in the Library hallway and consumed on the porch outside the library.

 

Bags in the Library

Large purses and backpacks are not allowed in the Library. These items must be left in the locker area across from the circulation desk. Although there are security cameras monitoring the bag room and study areas, the Library is not responsible for theft of your belongings. Students are advised to leave valuables at home.

 

Library Conduct

Students and staff are expected to show respect for each other. Rudeness will not be tolerated. Complaints by staff about students and by students about staff will be addressed by the Library Director or the Dean. Students and staff are expected to respect the need for quiet in the Library. Conversation is kept to a minimum. Group study rooms will soon be available on the second floor of the Library.

 

No seats can be reserved in the Library. Books and belongings, including laptops, left unattended at an unoccupied carrel will be removed and placed in the locker area.

 

Cell phone use is not permitted in the Library. Please turn cell phones off or put on vibrate when in the Library.

 

Printing:  Copy cards are sold at the Administration Office for $5.00 EC for 10 copies

 $25. 00 EC for 50 copies plus 5 bonus copies. No copies without cards.

 

Circulation Policy:  Loan Periods

• Circulating items : you may check out 7 items out for 7 days 
• DVD : 2 items / 3 days – no renewal
• Reserves – 3 hours
• Reference books and print journals may not be checked out.

 

Holds

• You may ask Library Staff to place a reserve/hold on a circulating item.
• Once the item is returned, you will be notified by email.
• If you have not picked up the item within 24 hours, the item will be returned to circulation or given to the next person requesting a hold on that item.

 

Renewals

• Materials may be renewed if no one else has placed a hold on the item.
• Bring the item to the circulation desk. No renewals over the phone.
• It is necessary to have your Student I.D. card so that Library Staff may access your account. 

 

Reserves: The Reserve Collection is located behind the Circulation Desk. Reserve items are in high demand and may be checked out for a 3 hour period. These items do not leave the Library. You may place a request/hold for the item to ensure you are next in line. Reserve items cannot be renewed if another student has placed a request/hold for the item.

 

Fines:

 

You are responsible for any items checked out under your name. Fines will not be waived.

• Fine notices are delivered each Monday to the student mailboxes and by email.
• It is your responsibility to check your mailbox/email.
• Fines will not be waived because you did not check.
• All fines are paid to the Administration office. Bring your stamped paid overdue notice form back to the Library to have the overdue notice removed from your record.

 

Fine Structure

 

Standard items and DVD EC $3.00, or US $ 1.00 per day

Reserve items are fined at EC $3.00 or US $1.00 per hour or EC $ 53.00 / US$14.00 per day

• If you have fines in excess of US$20.00/ EC $ 37.10, your Library privileges will be suspended until payment is made to the Administration Office. 
• Please do not write or highlight in the library books.  If you lose or damage library materials you will be charged the cost of replacement plus an administration fee of $EC 53.00 / $US $20.00.

Concourse OPAC: Two designated computers in the Library can be used to access the Concourse online public catalog.

Document Delivery and Literature Search Assistance

MUA offers faculty a document delivery service and assistance with literature searches related to your field of research. Please contact the Library Director.

 

Desk Copies for Faculty

Faculty may request examination copies of texts they are considering adopting for class use. The publishers encourage the use of electronic copies. Print copies requested via the librarian will be catalogued by the Library as “Faculty copy” and returned to the professor for private use. If the faculty member leaves MUA the book is returned to the Library.
